Distinguished and Famous people from Moreland City
🏛️ John Curtin
John Curtin lived in Brunswick during the formative years of his working and political life. His interests included reading, debating and involvement with local football and cricket, alongside trade-union activity. He became secretary of the Victorian Timber Workers’ Union in 1911 and developed the public-speaking and organisational skills that later served him in parliament. His move to Western Australia came in 1917, long before the wartime prime ministership. Brunswick’s part of the biography is therefore substantial residence and participation, within the municipality now called Merri-bek, formerly the City of Moreland.
🎨 Noel Counihan
Noel Counihan’s Brunswick association includes an unusually inventive defence of free speech. During the conflicts of the 1930s, the young artist spoke from a locked cage on a cart, complicating police attempts to stop him. A local memorial recalls that episode, while the Counihan Gallery carries his name and an ongoing interest in politically engaged art. His work and activism connected visual culture with the lives and struggles of working people. The Brunswick story has both conviction and theatrical ingenuity, showing how a public argument could become a memorable part of local history.
